This painting was commissioned for the Loreto Brotherhood of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and is one of the remarkable early works of famous Czech Baroque painter.

The high-quality painting of the Holy Family freeing souls from the flames of Purgatory was commissioned by the Loreto brotherhood Jesus, Mary, Joseph, which was active at the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the cloister of Loreto Sanctuary in Prague. It is one of the early known works of the famous Baroque painter. The painting was first presented at the Loreto exhibition Patrimonium Capuccinorum in 2011. Brandl also created the painting The Stigmatization of St. Francis for Loreto Sanctuary couple of years later for St. Francis chapel in the cloister. The painting of the Holy Family was loaned to the exhibition of the National Gallery in Prague: Petr Brandl: The Story of a Bohemian (20.10.2023–11.2.2024).
